Leonardo-Finmeccanica today announced the signing of a contract with the Guardia di Finanza for the supply of six additional AgustaWestland AW139 twin-engine intermediate helicopters. The aircraft was chosen following a European tender launched mid-2016, during which the AW139 proved to be the best product to meet the customer's requirements. The contract, worth around 90 million euros, includes a complete package of logistic support and training for pilots and technicians, and provides options for a further six machines. Deliveries of the six new helicopters will start in mid-2017 and will be completed in the 2019, bringing the total number of AW8 to the 139 in the Guardia di Finanza fleet and allowing the operator to take another step forward in replacing its AB412, next to end of operational life cycle. AW139 will be used to carry out a wide range of missions including patrolling and reconnaissance at sea and in the mountains, public order and protection of national security.

The Guardia di Finanza AW139 will be equipped with a wide range of equipment made by Leonardo, through the Avionics and Space Systems division. The relevant sensors, managed by Leonardo's ATOS (Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance) mission system, include the high-performance surveillance radar Gabbiano and the high-resolution electroplating system (Forward Looking Infra-Red / Low Light TV) with indicator of moving targets (Moving Target Indicator) fully integrated with the mission console and able to provide the crew with a clear and easily understandable tactical framework. The communications equipment supplied by Leonardo includes the SRT-700 multi-band radio, maritime and satellite communication systems and the friend-enemy identification transponder (IFF - Identification Friend or Foe) M428. The helicopter also features a cockpit and passengers compatible with night vision goggles (Night Vision Goggle), a new generation searchlight, a laser anti-collision system created by the Helicopters division of Leonardo (Optical Proximity LiDAR System), a system for rapid descent from the helicopter, cable cutters, auxiliary fuel tanks, emergency floats and lifeboats. The cabin of the AW139, accessible from two large side doors, offers ample space for on-board personnel, mission equipment and survivors in rescue missions.
