The French AWACS fly higher

21/05/15

The initial operating capability (IOC) of the modernized French AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) was achieved with the delivery of the second upgraded aircraft (of four) and the completion of operational tests. The upgrade is part of an agreement between the French Defense (Direction générale de l'Armement - DGA) and the US government.

France has four AWACS to monitor national airspace, national interests and support allied missions. The planes are receiving the modifications through a half-life upgrade (MLU) to increase surveillance, communication and conflict management capabilities.

AWACS crew members should benefit from reduced workload, better information and a better picture of the situation thanks to improvements.
