Defining an integrated solution for the production, supply, management and use of green hydrogen for port areas and long-range maritime transport: this is the goal of the memorandum of understanding signed by Fincantieri and Enel Green Power Italia. The two companies intend to enhance the excellence and know-how in their respective sectors to identify possible sustainable and innovative solutions.

"The signing of this agreement - comments Carlo Zorzoli, Head of Business Development at Enel Green Power - represents a further step forward in Enel Green Power's commitment to collaborate with operators interested in developing solutions for the use of green hydrogen in sectors to which it is not possible to resort to electrification, thus contributing to the energy transition process through the decarbonisation of industrial activities ".

Laura Luigia Martini, CEO Business Advisor and Executive Vice President Corporate Business Development of Fincantieri, said: "The European carbon neutrality goal by 2050 requires the creation of an industrial eco-system on which Fincantieri has been working concretely for some time now through a series of operational agreements with major Italian players for the implementation of complex projects in a short time. In this way, we are not only responding proactively to the community requests that states must comply with, but we are also consolidating our leadership position in the process towards a more sustainable economy and society ”.

In particular, the two companies will evaluate the possibility of collaborating both for the supply of green hydrogen to naval, subsea and surface units, and for industrial users included in the port area, including the design and construction of the necessary infrastructures, including storage. , where necessary; and for the design and development of a system for the management of energy flows, also through the involvement of other companies of the respective groups.

The Enel “Eugenio Montale” power plant in La Spezia will be able to be used as the first application test of the activities covered by the agreement, thus starting an energy transition process for the site from a sustainable perspective.

In the context of the energy transition, hydrogen can make a valuable contribution to the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries such as chemicals, aviation, shipping and non-electrified rail, as long as it is produced in a sustainable manner. Enel Green Power is committed to the implementation and development of projects for the production and use of “green” or “renewable” hydrogen, obtained from electrolysis of water powered exclusively by renewable electricity. The Group therefore launched the study of new business models that include the offer of green hydrogen for the decarbonisation of the industrial sectors, with partnerships and projects already under development in Italy, Chile, the United States and Spain.

This agreement may be the subject of subsequent binding agreements that the parties will define in compliance with the applicable legislation, including that relating to transactions between related parties.
