The US Air Force yesterday awarded Boeing a $ 2,9 billion contract for 18 KC-46A tanker aircraft, spare parts, support equipment and wing air refueling pod kits. With this fourth production batch, Boeing is now under contract for 52 KC-46 tankers.

Boeing received its first two production batches, for 7 and 12 aircraft, in August 2016. The third lot, for 15 aircraft, was awarded in January 2017.

"We are excited to work with the Air Force on an airplane that will guarantee its fleet unmatched capacity and versatility"Commented Mike Gibbons, vice president and program manager of the Boeing KC-46A tanker. "This is another big milestone for the team and we look forward to delivering this next-generation multi-role tanker in the years to come".

Boeing plans to build 179 aircraft-based refueling aircraft for the Air Force, replacing its antiquated tanker fleet. Deliveries will start later this year.

Boeing received an initial contract in the 2011 to design and develop the new Air Force tanker aircraft. The KC-46A is a multi-role tanker capable of supplying allied aircraft and the military coalition compatible with international air refueling procedures and transporting passengers, cargo and patients.

Boeing is assembling KC-46 aircraft at its Everett, Washington facility.
