On the morning of November 9 a Walrus submarine of the Royal Navy (the Dutch Royal Navy) would have approached the Russian battle group of the Admiral Kuznetsov sailing in the Mediterranean to reach the Syrian coasts.

The intervention of two antisubmarine units (il Severomorsk and Vice Admiral Kulakov) would have dissuaded the Dutch unit from continuing the approach, inviting him to move away from the area.

The submarine was located at 20 km away and was identified thanks to the Kamov 27 helicopters, supplied to the two Russian ships.

Despite the attempt to evade the hydro-acoustic contact, for about an hour the units of the Northern Fleet would have traced the submarine, which then would have decided to leave the operation area.

According to the spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Defense Konashenkov, the maneuvers of approaching the Russian naval group by NATO submarines could have very dangerous consequences for navigation. Nevertheless, the discovery of underwater units near the Russian naval convoy would become the practice from the moment it entered the Mediterranean. In the first days of November it would have fallen to the submarine USS Virginia of the US Navy. No further details have been issued on this last contact, nor have any confirmations been received from the Alliance.
