Palmira: ISIS backs away. The Syrian counteroffensive started

The westward push of ISIS is now over. The Caliphate militiamen, pursued by the Syrian army, have abandoned the positions around the Tyas air base (40 km from Palmyra) in the last few hours, beginning a general eastward retreat.

The substantial change of framework is taking place thanks to three main factors: the reinforcements reached the army of Damascus have allowed to consolidate the positions to the west of Palmyra, rendering vain the attempts of progress of the terrorists above all towards the mentioned base T 4; the massive use of land-to-ground missiles by loyalist forces has inflicted severe damage on Islamic State troops by making them impossible to concentrate; the Russian air support attacks on the Syrians have focused in the last hours along all the communication routes between Homs and eastern Syria, both on the side of the 42 road between Salamiyya and Raqqa, and on the axis of the M20, which from Palmyra reaches the besieged city of Deir Ezzor. Damage to convoys carrying supplies would have prompted the ISIS military command to back off so as not to fray the front too much.

Another reason why the Caliphate would no longer be able to maintain the offensive on the Western front is the progress of the Kurds in the north on the Raqqa route. Militia columns would have left their positions east of Homs to reinforce the lines of defense of the self-proclaimed capital of the Caliphate.

Important news are expected in the coming days.
