The (dangerous) contradictions of the European Union

At the end of February, the Prime Minister Conte declared the uselessness of closing the borders. Two weeks later, French President Macron, in a message to the nation, communicates the closure of French borders, as a measure to stem the spread of the flu virus COVID-19..

The other European countries are also conforming to this decision, securing the borders with their neighbors, following the line of the Hungarian, Polish and Austrian "sovereign" governments. Last Sunday German Chancellor Merkel announced that Germany's borders will be checked.

Given the spread of initiatives at national level, the Union is trying to take control of the situation, faced with the dismantling by member states of one of the pillars of the European structure: the Schengen Treaty.

The latter has been the free movement of people and goods between the acceding countries for the past XNUMX years. With the national initiatives that individual members are taking on in these days of crisis, de facto, we are witnessing a real overcoming the principles of Schengen.

From Brussels they can do nothing but take note of it and comply.

However, the guidelines issued by the Commission appear very paradoxical, especially as regards the control of the Union's borders.

The European Commission has ordered the closure of the Community territory (due and late measure) for at least thirty days, therefore no non-EU citizen, in theory, can enter one of the member states of the Union.

A claim of Power by the European Commission regarding border control of the Union.

It is precisely these guidelines that give rise to many doubts, since the decree closing the borders it does not apply to people who need international protectionthereby opening a gash in the "armor" of European borders.

This is because anyone who claims to be a political refugee - and therefore in need of protection - could access the countries of the Union. even irregular people could ask for political asylum, waiting in the host country (many months) for acceptance or non-acceptance of the application. On balance the situation with immigration, compared to status pre-virus, at least as far as our country is concerned, does not seem to have changed.

Anyone who seeks asylum will be able to enter Italy, while an Italian citizen can hardly go to Germany.

All this is a further demonstration of the inadequacy of the Union's institutional structures.
