Slogans and propaganda on the introduction of the draft: are we really ready for war?

It is said that among the qualities or defects of Italians there is a short memory, even towards their own history. Perhaps it is an intelligent method to exorcise and emerge unscathed from the country's many inefficiencies or its rivers of hypocrisy. The fact is that, as the elections approach, administrations and politics become more understanding, they speak a language closer to common feeling and, furthermore, fines are reduced. The modus operandi he doesn't differ much from the friendly creators of the three card game that we meet on the street; just don't remember that you lost a few euros and that's it...

We also easily forget the drama of war, the one accurately told by our grandparents. Today we are in the antechamber of a new conflict, but all we have to do is change the channel and the problem is removed, even if only in the media.

The suspension of the lever

We are now accustomed to the demagogic slogans that politics has increasingly served up to us since the beginning of the third millennium via TV and social media. It is therefore good to take a step back and remember how things went. The military service was suspended (and not revoked) from 1 January 2005, two years early during the Berlusconi government. However, the initiative started in 1999, when the request for suspension was presented by the first government of Massimo D'Alema and by the Minister of Defense Carlo Luigi Scognamiglio.

All the political forces agreed, including the League. The objectives were above all to saving: reduction of expenses for individual baggage, economic treatment (decades, food, accommodation, etc.), closure (and sale...) of barracks and reduction of the annual training maintenance costs of a citizen called up to arms. However, the armed forces did not fare much better economically with the suspension of the draft, being forced to enter into external contracts for barracks services and beyond, eliminating the free nature of some internal services.

The rising

After the Second World War, military service was progressively reduced from 24 months to 10, reaching the famous 76 months for the troops from 97 to 12 and 14 instead of 15 months for the AUC (official supplement students, ed.). The real professionals were the officers and non-commissioned officers, while the troops represented little more than a convenient numerical outline.

Today six months of military service would be of no use, it would be an expensive college full of come on moods of the young talents and image risks for the administration. It would have colossal costs, lack of structures and highly specialized personnel, now far from being able to impose resounding "bullshit". Furthermore, temporary and low-demand enlistment opportunities have long existed, for example VFIs, as well as civil service in Civil Defense or voluntary organisations. So nothing new was invented.

Poor motivation

A current and little-known issue is that, among the thousands of young people who, with some difficulty, we try to approach the RAVs, a lower rate reaches (and remains) in the final assignment departments. The reasons are various: inadequate economic treatment, a life with too many sacrifices and distances. Many of the dropouts still try to obtain specializations from the armed forces, but upon discharge they opt for more attractive civilian jobs.

Education starts from home and school

The crucial issue is another: the education of children. It is now too demanding to educate children, it is better to be "friends" and support them; many families stand as champions in defense of every misdeed of their children. The news is full of news of acts of intimidation towards principals and professors and delinquent behavior sometimes suggested by the web or by some successful rapper.

The armed forces are not responsible for the education of Italians' children. Delegate further responsibilities to our military on the inefficiencies of a society that for over twenty years she has been educated to see the State as an enemy it is not the task of defense, but of the coherence, credibility and concreteness of a political class.

Call to arms

Given the threatening geopolitical picture and the not brilliant numbers of soldiers that our armed forces can field, we have to ask ourselves how we will be able to proceed with gradually recalling the soldiers on leave to arms. The recall could first affect citizens who have been on leave for five years, scanning the population up to their forty-fifth year of age. We remind you that the art. 52 of the Constitution states that "The defense of the homeland is the sacred duty of every citizen".

The Kiev government, to make up for the lack of soldiers, has forced men between 18 and 60 to circulate with a military identity card. Russia immediately planned a mobilization of 300 thousand reservists, similar numbers for Israel. In Italy, however, the reserve has always been a taboo topic... Are we therefore ready for a hypothetical conflict?
