Marevivo and Navy: Fighting to ignorance and abuse in the Mediterranean

27/03/15

When, during a recent conference, I heard the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral De Giorgi, stress that one of the main problems of the Mediterranean is the environment, I was pleasantly surprised. It was the deep conviction and the obvious genuine concern that impressed me.

The chronicles of recent years put the issue of illegal immigration in first place in the Mare Nostrum and the dramatic price in terms of human lives contained only thanks to the work - whether shared or not - of the men and women of the Navy, of the Captaincy of Port and Merchant Navy. And this was certainly not overshadowed by the admiral. However, after decades of controversy in the newspapers regarding the underestimation of materials, armaments or dangerous environments by the military, I discover that for over thirty years - in unsuspecting times therefore - the Navy has been actively involved in the defense of the home sea.

To provide us with an overview of the activities and threats taking place in the Mediterranean, I had the availability of the head of the dual use office and external collaborations of the Navy, the captain of the vessel Fabio Agostini, and the tenacious president of Marevivo, Rosalba Giugni, one of the main associations who have been fighting every day for years against ignorance and national environmental abuses.

I have learned a lot and thank them for what has been done and on the road - maybe in this case it is better "go down" - who continue to follow with determination.
