Salvatore Girone: that strange feeling of déjà-vu ...

(To Andrea Cucco)
30/05/16

There was waiting for Saturday at Ciampino airport: 90 accredited journalists, photographers and cameramen, politicians and men in uniform. For over four years the military leaders have obeyed the (unwritten) directive not to talk about navy riflemen, to leave the waters of information quiet.

Who, like this newspaper, hosted the editorials of General Fernando Termentini and organized in-depth studies and initiatives on the matter, has long dreamed of something more from this country, at least of its inhabitants. Enough has never been done.

Years later, the question - postponed, unresolved! - we still have difficulty understanding gravity and limits: we still think of Indian fishermen when the possible culpability of our men is a point that should have been kept separate from an illegitimate seizure without accusations from fellow citizens.

How many times have Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone returned to Italy with the hope of staying?

How many times have they been welcomed into the palaces, embraced, reassured and kissed?

What will happen at the end of international arbitration?

The judiciary will block a possible return to India in the future, as it would could/due years ago?

In Italy it is forgotten then that of "naval fuciliers", people betrayed behind by promises of government never realized, there are several tens of millions ...

We were saying that there were all of them waiting for Salvatore Girone the rifleman. All except one: the president of the council Matteo Renzi. The political figure a few days before had enthusiastically tweeted "... let's welcome back the Girò Girone who will be with us the #2giugno".

Those who, like us, after so much silence were already "sharpening their pen" to rebel against the exploitation of a shame, which has now entered the history of Italy, was pleasantly surprised by the turnaround of the prime minister.

Salvatore Girone will not be with us at the parade - stated Renzi yesterday - we must avoid experiencing this phase without sobriety and without style.

I therefore applaud those who, unlike their predecessors, did not speculate politically on the event and managed to make the choice not to show off Group on June 2nd appear as dictated by "sobriety and style"!

We do not know which of the councilors to convince him, but we must sincerely congratulate him ...
