Navy Riflemen, another defeat on the horizon

31/03/15

In 12 days Massimiliano Latorre should return to India while Salvatore Girone continues his long solitude preparing to spend Easter in Delhi too.

Until now only deafening silence, started after the last words of Prime Minister Renzi who invited not to speak, followed by those of Minister Gentiloni who informed that he was discussing with India an Italian proposal, also engaging our Intelligence Services, not even they were swapping hostages kidnapped by terrorists.

The words of the Foreign Minister suddenly confirmed by his Indian equivalent and which recalled a shameful hypothesis for the international visibility of Italy: that of accepting that India "punished" the two Navy Riflemen with a modest sentence, sending them back to Italy on the basis of the bilateral agreement on the 11 August 2012 prisoner exchange.

Yesterday, suddenly, ANSA breaks the institutional silence and informs that a delegation of the Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies had gone to Taranto to visit the convalescent Latorre, proposing statements by the President of the Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies that induce, at least in who writes, a doubt. Maybe from Delhi news is coming reassuring about the solution of the story and approaching the deadline of the 12 April after so much silence was a "political" signal.

Sparse words of circumstance those of the Honorable Elio Vito "Massimiliano is a strong man, but at the same time he is tried and marked by this experience. '' A human sign of closeness to the suffering person, but who tell us nothing about what State is doing to solve the problem.

Doubt grows as you continue to read the President's statement. '' We came here to express a different awareness on the eve of the expiry of the return to India ... We think that we must not discuss these days whether Massimiliano Latorre should return to India or not, but we must discuss how Salvatore Girone should return to Italy''.

Affirmations that induce a single thought: the time of confrontation should be over and instead we continue to grope in the dark. We are still very far from a solution of the affair that is not based on compromises, even if the Honorable Vito concludes by reaffirming "the need to resort to the international authorities to resolve the case" and urges that the institutions thank our soldiers engaged in operations risky, delicate, in the interest of the country.

Words that we have already heard several times in these three years, repeated in every official circumstance and also "clippings" of official speeches at the highest institutional levels. Always equal in content and terminology, re-proposed without even attempting to renew its form by using the different lexical options that the Italian language makes available.

Once again, an all-Italian tradition that has never changed over time is respected. Many words, few facts. Expressions of institutional intent that come back to me after a few decades.

Words that in a sense offend the intelligence and ethics of the military operating in the world to ensure security, especially for those (dead, wounded and disabled) who have given their lives to the state to affirm the values of the Honor and loyalty.

Testimonio, for having lived in first person many years ago, that habits are not changed in time, today's words are almost similar to those I heard every time I left or returned from a mission abroad from the years' 80.
