Who will draw the short toothpick?

The issue of the appointment of the highest military head of Defense could be resolved at today's meeting of the Council of Ministers.

If years ago there were only a few candidates competing for the nomination, this time - with the highest post going to an Army officer (barring surprises and consequent bad feelings at a time when they should be categorically avoided...) - there are at least four: the outgoing secretary general, Gen. Portolano, the commander of COVI, Gen. Figliuolo, the Army chief of staff, Gen. Masiello and the military advisor to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Gen. Federici.

It would seem that the inauguration ceremony of the new Chief of Defense Staff has been set for early October. Since the expiration of General Portolano's mandate coincides with the period, while that of the current Chief of Defense Staff is in November, it would seem that an agreement has been reached to correct legal deadlines and allow his appointment.

In a country where cheering, sympathies, trips, betrayals or personal interests have sometimes prevailed over what will one day rightly be called “national interest” (we have never been and are not yet a Nation), never like today will the choice determine the leadership of a battered tub in the midst of an impending storm. Soon, willingly or not, we will be hit by it and we will have to face the worst with the little available.

Italians, in uniform and out, are extraordinary people who, if motivated and properly informed, can achieve any goal. However, they are also disillusioned, disappointed by the ridiculous propaganda, the charlatan rhetoric and the “democratic” censorship.

The new head of SMD will have to regain the trust of his men and women as well as that of his fellow citizens.

The thunder is approaching while the tragicomic mass distractions increase. There is little to envy…
