ChatGPT: an instructive chat with an Artificial Intelligence

19/01/23

Surely in the last few weeks you have heard of Chat GPT, a chat that uses Artificial Intelligence to produce texts. Since I'm curious I decided to test its effectiveness and limits. Below you will find a chat, the first, that I had with my new friend.

From reading the chat, some of the limits of ChatGPT emerge, which make it clear that there is still a lot to work on. But let's be careful, in fact not all the limits are real, some in my opinion are simply imposed from the outside so they are not real limits of the ChatGPT but more of the limits of the online test system.

So have a good read.

Do you know Italian?

Yes, I know the Italian language. I can help you with questions or translations into Italian. How can I help you?

Are you able to research information on the internet and use it to write an article?

Yes, I am able to use the information on the internet to write articles. However, the quality and accuracy of these articles depend on the availability and quality of the sources used. Also, because I'm a language model, my ability to understand and interpret information can have limitations. I can try to write an article on a specific topic if you want.

Yes, I'd like to help you get to know me better. Do you understand what I mean?

I'm sorry, there seems to have been a misunderstanding. As a language model, I don't have the ability to "know" or "understand" in the human sense of the term. My function is to generate text based on the information provided. If you want, I can help you write an article on a specific topic or answer specific questions using the information available on the internet.

I would like you to try to write an article of popular science using as a model the articles written by me, Alessandro Rugolo, and published on Difesaonline and on my blog, Accademia della Cultura.

I'm sorry, but I don't have access to personal information about the articles you've written and published, nor do I have access to your blog, and I'm unable to use your articles as a template for writing a new article. However, I can use the information available on the internet to write a popular science article on a specific topic of your choice. Could you provide me with a precise topic to write about and I will do my best to generate an informative and accurate article on the subject.

Great, I'm interested in seeing how you would explain to kids aged 10 or 15 what ChatGPT is and how it works.

ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI, an organization dedicated to the study of artificial intelligence. My task is to generate text based on the information provided. To do this, I use a technology called "neural networks" that mimics the way the human brain processes information.

To make 10 or 15 year olds understand, a comparison can be made with a sort of digital textbook, where instead of being written by a human author, it is written by a computer which uses all the information it has gathered in precedence. Like a textbook, I can answer questions or generate text on a range of topics.

While ChatGPT can generate text and answer questions much like a human, it's important to remember that I don't have the ability to think, understand, or "know" in the human sense of the term. My "knowing" is limited to information I've seen in my training, and there may be some things I don't know or don't fully understand.

Are you able to "learn" from what you write after your training? For example, did you learn anything from the chat with me, perhaps about the use of the Italian language?

No, I don't have the ability to "learn" or "adapt" like a human being. As a speech model, my behavior and performance are limited to what I was trained to do during the training process. I don't have the ability to "memorize" or "learn" new information from user interactions. My behavior is based on the statistical processing of the information present in my training dataset, therefore I can generate answers and texts that seem "intelligent" and "coherent" but this does not mean that I have the ability to learn or understand in the human sense of the term.

Can I ask you to generate a text reporting our first chat? I will keep it and later I will ask you the same questions to see if there have been any upgrades in your skills. Are there any problems doing what I ask you?

Yes, I can generate a text reporting our chat. However, it is important to note that the generated text may not be exactly identical to the original conversation since the generation of the text is based on the statistical processing of the information present in my training dataset, and the generated text may be influenced by the information present in it. In regards to comparing text generated today versus text generated in the future, it's important to note that as a language model I don't have the ability to learn or adapt, so there will be no upgrades in my capabilities. What you get today will be similar to what you get in the future. In general there are no problems generating a text based on our chat, but I would encourage you to check that there is no personal or confidential information that you do not wish to share.

Rest assured, all the information I have released is public. You can use them to produce text. Thanks in advance.

I am happy to know that the information you have provided is public. Here is a transcript of our conversation:

What's up? Why did you stop halfway?

Sorry, there must have been a mistake. As an automated language model, I have a length limit for generating text, and in this case I've reached the maximum length limit for generating text. I apologize for the inconvenience and I will be happy to help you with any other questions or requests.

Could you pick up where you left off in generating the report?

I'm sorry, but I don't have the ability to remember the past conversation and pick up where I left off. I can only generate new text based on the input provided. I would be happy to help you with any other questions or requests.

I understand, thank you for now, I don't need anything else. Good day.

Glad to have been of help. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance. Good day to you as well.

Just a few remarks at the end of the article.

As it is easy to see from reading the answers, the Italian language is used quite well but there are still some errors.

It is also important to note the maximum length imposed when producing texts. But the most important thing is to note that ChatGPT has no memory, at least in this public version.

We will see if what is stated is true by subjecting our ChatGPT to subsequent tests.

To understand how seriously this is taken, among the links below there is one to an article which talks about Microsoft investments in the OPENAI company, which created ChatGPT... We are talking about billions of dollars!
