The Roman Star exercise, which saw the British Royal Anglian Regiment and the 3rd Alpine Regiment stationed in Pinerolo engaged in two intense weeks of joint training in the Piedmont Alps, ended today.

The “Roman Star”, elaborated in English by the 3rd Alpini according to the “Skolkan” scenario adopted by NATO, focused on three areas: mountain, woodland and urban. The program included climbing, movement techniques in the mountains, ambushes and counter-ambushes by day and by night in the woods of the Pinerolo area, combat in the inhabited centers, shooting at the shooting range and a final test for two mixed Italian-British companies, which for two days in a row they countered an enemy infiltration, attacking the opponent's checkpoints and freeing the captured area from regular and irregular opposing forces, the latter played by a group of men from the 3rd Susa battalion.

In the final phase of the Roman Star a complex maneuver took place at the training area of ​​the 3rd Alpini, which saw the use of Army Aviation helicopters to transport the infantry of the Royal Anglian and the Susa, specialists of the 32 ° sapper engineers regiment to raid buildings manned by enemy forces, and support (in simulated mode) of mortars and mountain artillery, provided by the 1st land artillery regiment of Fossano. The bilateral exercise allowed the 140 British soldiers (including a group of Cambridge students, aspiring officers) - from the plains of Bury St. Edmonds, north of London - to test a scenario war on new and challenging terrain. , amalgamating with the Alpini of the Alpine Brigade Taurinense, called to practice in their environment with a highly professional partner. The "Roman Star" is part of the international dimension of the Italian Armed Forces, accustomed for decades to operate in NATO contexts with Allied units.
