The blasters reclaim war residues in Molfetta

13/02/14

The remediation of 34 remnants of World War II at the port of Molfetta by the Army bomb squad began Tuesday, and will continue until tomorrow.

The bombs, incendiary-type British aircraft bombs dating back to the last world war, were found still functioning in the sea. Later the Army specialists provided for the storage and securing of the residues in a special area to avoid any spontaneous combustion processes. The blasting of the bombs began yesterday in a quarry in the municipality of Ruvo di Puglia.

Army bomb squads, from the 2009 in the Apulian port areas, have already defused 289 bombs, of which about 260 area bombs and 24 rockets.

The Army specialists belonging to the 11th Engineers Regiment are organized into emergency teams called 'EOD' (English acronym for Explosive Ordnance Disposal, translated "explosive ordnance reclamation") and have the competence for this type of intervention on Puglia, Abruzzo, Molise, Basilicata and Calabria, as well as boasting a long experience in operational missions carried out abroad.

Over the last 10 years the Army bomb squads have carried out over 30000 remediation operations throughout the national territory.
