Reclaimed bomb at Caselle Torinese

(To Army Majority State)
25/01/19

The blasters of the 32 ° genius regiment of the alpine brigade Taurinense at 11.00 am today, the clean-up operations of the 100 kg aircraft bomb found near the runway of Caselle airport, found last week during some runway extension works.

Starting from 7.30, the operators of the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) nucleus first prepared the device for safe handling and then proceeded to load it onto a truck. Under the escort of a state police patrol, the bomb was then transported to a quarry in San Carlo Canavese, which had already been prepared for blasting by the engineers in recent days. The intervention of the specialized personnel of the Army was conducted in a time slot free from air traffic, thus minimizing the inconvenience for the airport and for citizens.

The operations were carried out quickly because the bomb was missing from a spool, having been buried by the Italian soldiers during the war and, together with similar devices already removed over the years, prepared to destroy the track in the event of an Allied attack, not allowing thus the use of the military flight field by enemy forces.

The specialists of the 32nd sapper engineering regiment - who boast valuable experience also gained in missions abroad - in 2018 alone carried out 110 interventions, cleaning up, among others, large aircraft bombs such as those found at the Lingotto di Turin, in Casale Monferrato (AL) and a few days ago in Valenza (AL), and rendering inoffensive over 300 unexploded remnants of war in Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta. Alongside its purely military activity, the regiment intervenes, at the request of the competent prefectures, in activities to support the population in case of disasters, such as in Liguria last November or in Abruzzo following the well-known seismic and climatic events.
