Undersecretary of Defense Angelo Tofalo has recently met with the leadership of the Army for a deepening of the technical aspects related to the "Safe Roads" operation.

At Palazzo Esercito he was received by the head of SME, General Salvatore Farina, and by his staff who presented a detailed briefing containing not only the results achieved that "regarding this operation - said the undersecretary - they are significant numbers in terms of interventions, arrests, controls, complaints and seizures of weapons and vehicles". During the meeting there was also talk about the economic treatment and allowances for military personnel, service shifts, the need to improve housing facilities, and the repayment of the means "increasingly inefficient due to their use in environments other than the tactical and off-road nature for which they were designed".

The undersecretary was then able to wear the equipment supplied to the military employees in competition with the Police Forces. Four different types are available: "0 type" (4,5 kg) adopted by 11% of personnel, "1 type" (7,5 kg) supplied to 21% of units, "2 type" (10 kg) assigned to 62% of the military and the "3 type" (15 kg) distributed to 6% of the soldiers, each with modular characteristics, from the minimum level to the maximum level of mobility and protection, inversely proportional to each other.

"As regards the operational lines of 'Safe Roads', among the possible variants, the reduction in the number of fixed sites is being evaluated in favor of the use of mobile patrols, guaranteeing or improving the level of safety performance", Informs the undersecretary Tofalo,"According to one of the graphs shown to me, about half of the current services are made up of a static activity near sensitive places. The Army is prepared and formed for a dynamic, impact operation thanks to the increase in patrolling in the central pedestrian areas, supported by the motorized one in the suburbs."

There are more than seven thousand units, mainly of the Italian Army, distributed in almost all Italian regions in three macro areas: north, center-north and south. The spectrum of the "Safe Roads" operation also includes the safety of the red areas in the areas hit by the earthquake in central Italy, of Genoa in the isolated neighborhoods due to the collapse of the Morandi bridge; in Campania in the Land of Fires.

"I feel obliged to intervene immediately and well because this operation is more and more in line with the need for the safety of the community in defense of the current threat. We must make sure that 'Safe Roads' is the maximum expression of the potential of over seven thousand professionals in uniform that day and night are at the service of the community", Concludes Undersecretary Tofalo,"We owe this to him, personally by virtue of the delegations granted to me by Minister Trenta, to our boys in uniform, to put them in the best conditions to do and do well to protect taxpayers."
