16 Happened August 1914: The First Sunken Austrian Ship

16/08/14

Light cruiser Zenta and Austro-Hungarian Navy destroyer Ulan on a block cruise along the Montenegrin coast, are surprised by a strong Anglo-French formation in the waters of Bar.

In the action that ensued, Ulan managed to escape and return to Kotor while the Zenta (commander, frigate captain Paul Pachner) courageously accepted the unequal combat soon after being sunk.

150 men of the 324 who made up the crew were rescued.

The Zenta is the first Austrian warship sunk in the conflict.
