01 happened September 1909: In service the ships Pisa and Amalfi

01/09/14

The armored cruisers Pisa and Amalfi of the class "Pisa" enter service in Spezia respectively at the command of the vessel captain Gerolamo Magliano and of the parigrado Carlo Scotti.

Built, the first from the Orlando yard in Livorno with the 20 February 1905 setting and the 15 September 1907 and the second from the Odero shipyard in Genoa with the 24 1905 July setting and 5 1908 May . Orlando, were characterized by a sober and elegant line, by a main armament consisting of 4 254 / 45 mm cannons in two coupled systems arranged in armored towers, one bow and one stern, and one secondary of 8 cannons from 190 / 45 mm , also in twin towers placed in a wall.

Notable also the minor armament. With a displacement of over 9.800 you "Pisa" had a power of 20.000 hp that allowed to reach the speed of 32 nodes; the vertical protection had the maximum thickness of 200 mm and the horizontal one of 51 mm

These units at the time of their design could certainly be considered avant-garde constructions, however, the long period of gestation of the design and of the set-up greatly diminished the advantages and when they entered service, they were already overcome by the first battle cruisers - the British "Indomitable" and the Germanic Blücher - markedly superior in armament and speed with a slightly lower protection.
