The Carlo Margottini frigate crosses the Suez Canal and enters the Red Sea

The European Multi-Mission Frigate (FREMM) Carlo Margottini completed yesterday, Monday 26 February, the transit of the Suez Canal for the first time.

In the Red Sea, the ship met the patrol vessels of the 10 Coastal Naval Group (COMGRUPNAVCOST 10), a national contribution to the Multinational Force & Observers (MFO), for a brief interaction and exchange of materials.

Match last 20 February from La Spezia, Nave Margottini, before heading to Suez, made a stop in Souda, on the island of Crete, to test and increase the crew's knowledge of Maritime Interdiction Operations by carrying out activities at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Center (NMIOTC ), NATO's center of excellence. During the transit to Crete, the ship received a visit from the commander-in-chief of the naval squad of the Navy, squad admiral Donato Marzano, who greeted the men and women of the crew before the start of the long stay out headquarters.

In the coming months the frigate Margottini will be engaged in a naval campaign in the Indian Ocean, in the Arabian Sea and in the adjacent Gulf, at the end of the campaign, in April, it will take part in the European anti-piracy operation Atalanta as a ship the seat of the commander of the force (Italian).

The deployment of the Italian FREMM, in addition to guaranteeing the presence and surveillance for the protection of maritime traffic lines of national interest, is part of the activities that the Navy conducts with allied and friendly nations in the sector of multinational cooperation and dialogue between countries. At the same time, this activity makes it possible to guarantee a qualified presence in foreign countries with which Italy has important political-diplomatic, economic and military cooperation relations.
