With a command post exercise (CPX) which involved the Sector 60 of Baidoa, the Sector 12 of Mogadishu and the staff of the Somali National Army (SNA General Staff), the Staff Training Course held by instructors from the European Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S), the Italian-led European Union Training Mission.

The "Gashan" exercise, the first activity of its kind, was carried out with the aim of improving the internal procedures and the relations between the staff of the Somali National Army and the directly dependent Commands. The soldiers in training set up the operative rooms of the interested Commands and applied the procedures and tools learned during the different phases of the course.

In particular, Somali officers trained to plan and give operational orders to subordinate units, maintaining a constant flow of information between them and the general staff. Trainees were assisted during the exercise by EUTM-S instructors and specialist advisers as well as UK officers. This made it possible to detect the effectiveness of the coordination and commitment of the international community.

During the Distinguished Visitors Day, a day dedicated to showing to an audience of military experts the results of the training carried out and the importance it holds in the broader European cooperation program for military training, the commander of the EUTM-S, Gen.b. Pietro Addis, with the deputy commander of the Somali defense forces, brig.gen. Bile Ibrahim Adan and the Chief of Operations of the Somali National Army General Staff, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Sheikh Madoobe, in addition to other military authorities, visited the Headquarters of the Somali National Army and the Sector 12, in Mogadishu, attending the different phases of the exercise. The Somali officers engaged in the particular activity have been able to test themselves in simulations that have tested their skills and knowledge acquired in the field of command and control as well as in planning and conducting and managing Staff activities.
