Afghanistan: Italian soldiers in Qal'ha-Ye Now

(To TAAC WEST HQ)

On March 17, the consultancy activity planned by the military of the Italian contingent, on a "Sassari" brigade base, was developed in favor of the Afghan security forces, located in the town of Qal'ha-Ye Now, about 120 Km north east of Herat.

For the occasion, about 100 Italian instructors conducted consultancy activities in favor of local counterparties, with the aim of monitoring the operations in progress and identifying the priorities to be pursued during the next operational activities.

In addition, the commander of the Train Advise Assist West Command West (TAAC W) chaired a security shura with local political representatives, the commanders of the local Security Forces and the village and religious leaders of the area, addressing security issues with them.

The area, in fact, will soon be affected by the works for the completion of the Ring Road, or the highway that connects the entire country. The activity will have important economic repercussions not only for the area affected by the works but for the entire western region. The clear understanding and sharing of the local population will therefore be the essential prerequisite for ensuring the progress of the works in the best security conditions.

At the Qal'ha-Ye Now barracks, the soldiers of the Afghan Nation Army (ANA), belonging to the 3rd brigade of the 207th Army Corps, continue to receive periodic training and advice by the military Italians on a mission in Afghanistan.

Periodic Train Advise Assist (PTAA), is the acronym used to indicate these training and assistance activities developed in areas distant from the Camp Arena base - home of the national contingent - that can not be carried out on a daily basis and therefore are organized periodically on the basis of requests that the Afghan security forces address to Italian instructors. These consultations, which exclude the employment of the Italian military in kinetic activities, contribute to the raising of the technical-tactical skills of the Army and the Police and strengthen ties with the territory.

The work of the advisor Italians - which also includes the activities of PTAA - is developed within the Resolute Support (RS) mission with the main task of training, advising and assisting local security forces, to improve their functionality and their ability to self-sustain.
