Afghanistan: Major Nicola Garzone receives the "Hero of the week" award

In recent days, at the headquarters of the Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan (CSCT-A), inside the Kabul International Airport, in the presence of the commander of CSCT-A, Lieutenant General James E. Rainey (USA) and the Combat Sergeant Major Maurice Jackson, has been awarded recognition of Hero of the week to the major of the Italian Army Nicola Garzone.

The officer received congratulations from the general Salvatore Camporeale, senior national representative of the Italian contingent in Afghanistan and, since 10 November, Deputy Commander of the Resolute Support (RS) mission.

Born in Campobasso, coming from the 188th course of the Military Academy of Modena and belonging to the Bersaglieri specialty, Nicola Garzone is employed in Afghanistan as staff officer of current operations. The award was given to him for having been able to optimally manage the land and air carriers used during the Training, Advising and Assisting (TAA) missions, which RS personnel carry out daily in the city of Kabul and in the adjacent provinces.

CSTC-A is a US-led multinational command inserted within the Resolute Support mission, which carries out training, consultancy and assistance tasks for Afghan institutions and local Security Forces. He is also in charge of managing the economic resources from contributing countries and destined for the development of projects aimed at building a stable Afghanistan, developing effective and sustainable security forces and strengthening the rule of law within the Afghan borders.

Italy guarantees NATO and the Republic of Afghanistan its support in terms of men and means. The current national contribution provides for the deployment of men and women, from all four Armed Forces, in Herat, at the Train, Advise and Assist Command West, and in Kabul, where the staff mainly covers staff positions at the Resolute Support Command .
