Afghanistan: exercise for the safety of polling stations

With the invasion of the Afghan security forces inside a hypothetical polling station, the release of the hostages held by the terrorists and the securing of the area, the exercise recently organized by the Italian contingent, on a brigade basis, ended " Sassari ”, in view of the next political elections in Afghanistan.

The training activity, which involved about 400 local soldiers and policemen, assisted by Italian instructors, tested the Command, Control and Communication (C3) capabilities of the Operation Coordination Center Regional (OCCR), that is the operations room that will manage all the forces "on the ground" responsible for ensuring security on election days, throughout the western region of Afghanistan.

The scenario of the exercise contemplated the assault on three polling stations, two male and one female, and the kidnapping of some voters to discourage the voters and thus boycott the same elections. The intervention of units of the Army and four teams of the special forces of the police, as well as of an EOD team and health assets, all Afghans, showed the high level of professionalism achieved in the application of the technical-tactical procedures for the securing the entire area, raiding buildings and freeing hostages.

The exercise, born of the will of Italian advisors, replicates with increasing levels of complexity a similar activity carried out, for the first time in the entire country, last March, with the aim of making the regional coordination center and the provincial ones fully competent in the application of command and control procedures and able to independently guarantee security during the free expression of votes of the Afghan people.

The security forces of the western region are capitalizing on the Train Advise and Assist (TAA) activities provided by the military of the Italian contingent, demonstrating that they are capable of planning and conducting actions independently, guaranteeing high levels of safety in all circumstances in which they are called to operate.

Main purpose of the mission Resolute Support is to train, assist and advise the Afghan Security Forces to improve their functionality and their ability to self-sustain themselves.
