The patrol Orione (photo opening) replaced the 14 April Nave Sirio (photo below) in the patrolling of the areas of the Sicilian Channel affected by the fishing activities of the Sicilian motor-fishing fleets. The units are part of the Command Patrol Forces for Coastal Surveillance and Defense based in Augsburg.

Both Navy Navy ships, in transit to and from the operation area, have simultaneously assured patrolling of areas of mineral interest under the responsibility of the "General Directorate for Safety, including environmental mining and energy activities, National Mining Office for Hydrocarbons and the Georisources "(DSG-UNMIG) of the Ministry for Economic Development in the context of complementary activities carried out by the armed force.

This interministerial collaboration is mainly carried out in the surveillance for the prevention of pollution of marine waters and in the patrolling of the Mediterranean portions open to the exploration, research and cultivation of hydrocarbons, in order to prevent and detect unauthorized or potentially dangerous activities for the Marine environment.

In particular, the Navy units engaged in activities in favor of the MISE locate and identify the research units present in the area, monitoring them constantly; control the observance by seafarers of the security zones established around offshore installations with orders from the Maritime Authorities and verify the correct functioning of the alerts for the navigators on offshore installations.

During 2017 3317 patrols were carried out in 263 missions in favor of the DSG-UNMIG without interfering with the primary activities of surveillance and protection of national interests carried out by Naval Units of the Navy.

Ship Orione the patrol operations relating to the Fishing Watch (Vi.Pe.) will continue in the next few days, an activity with which the Navy has ensured the continuous naval presence in the international waters of the Strait of Sicily since 1959, to ensure the free exercise of fishing for national fishing vessels in full compliance with current national laws.
