The Foscari patrol vessel of the "Green Fleet"

30/01/14

The experimentation of a Green Diesel-based biofuel on the Foscari offshore patrol of the Italian Navy ended yesterday in Augusta (SR).

The green naval gas oil is a mixture formulated by the Navy with Eni, containing 50% of F76 and 50% of second generation bio fraction, obtained from feedstocks not in competition with the food market. The high content of new generation biofuel is a result of excellence for maritime transport in general. The production of green marine diesel will take place in Italy, in the bio-refinery of Porto Marghera (VE) starting from March 2014.

The results of the tests are eloquent: the change from one fuel to another occurred without any variation in the performance and thermodynamic parameters of the propulsion engines and generators. The measured reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and polluting emissions is in line with expectations. The new product is compatible with existing machines and circuits without making any changes and without taking special precautions.

Rear Admiral Mario Culcasi, commander of the Patrolling Forces for Coastal Surveillance and Defense, highlighted how "the transition to green naval fuel has been transparent, imperceptible, the scenario on board has not changed at all".

The Italian Navy is the first in Europe to operationally test green diesel, even in advance of the European deadline which provides for the use of 10% bio fraction by 2020.

The entire Eni technical staff who assisted and supported the tests also shared the satisfaction for the good outcome of the tests and commented: "the experimentation of this green diesel by the Navy is a test bed of absolute excellence, since the bio share used for the formulation of the fuel reached 50% ".

Eco-efficient military vessels will allow the future to reduce the consumption of petroleum derivatives, contributing to the achievement of the commitments made by Italy and the European Union in the international field on the containment of emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, in accordance with the lines guide to the National Energy Strategy.
