Change at the head of the Port Authorities yesterday in Rome at the headquarters of the Coast Guard: Admiral Vincenzo Melone has in fact left the post of commanding general of the Corps and the active service after well 46 years of commitment to Admiral Giovanni Pettorino.

Present at the ceremony were the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Graziano Delrio, the Chief of Defense Staff, General Claudio Graziano and the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Team Admiral Valter Girardelli.

Flattering are the goals achieved in these years by the Port Authorities defined by Admiral Girardelli: "fundamental pillar, founding and enabling, together with the operational one, the logistic one and the training one, not only of the Marina itself, but of the maritime vocation of our Italy".

In highlighting the particular commitment lavished in these years by the Capitanerie di Porto in safeguarding human life at sea, General Claudio Graziano affirmed "the search and rescue activities carried out made it possible to contain the dramatic results of the massive migratory phenomenon that affects our country and the entire European continent. In 2017 alone, more than 28.000 migrants were rescued and 115.000 people were rescued overall in operations coordinated by the general command. A series of very important results that could not have been achieved without the extraordinary operational and organizational effort offered by the women and men of the Coast Guard".

The head of SMD in conclusion turning to the deployed personnel declared "The Armed Forces have the duty to put in place every possible solution to ensure their staff can operate at their best, having available the best available resources and knowing that their safety is always protected to the maximum. This is an unavoidable responsibility of the commanders at every level and to which the Armed Forces have never waived".
