Depression and post traumatic stress disorder: is Italy finally pulling its head out of the hole?

(To Andrea Cucco)
25/01/19

A few weeks ago we published a letter (more) in which an alarm bell was sounded by the family lawyer of an Army soldier who committed suicide in an Italian barracks.

Our country has for too long ignored or relegated to a corner a serious phenomenon that in civilized countries is known and faced with courage and without fear (or budgetary constraints ...).

The appeal does not seem to have gone unheard.

We are confident that we will soon have correct and reliable data - on a "dear" subject - from the "government of change".

RIZZO, ARESTA, CHIAZZESE, CORDA, DEL MONACO, D'UVA, ERMELLINO, FRUSONE, GALANTINO, GUBITOSA, IORIO, IOVINO, ROBERTO ROSSINI, GIOVANNI RUSSO and TRAVERSI. - To the President of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Economy and Finance. - To know - provided that:

the year just ended reports to the chronicle several cases of suicide among the members of the Police and the Armed Forces;

in the face of this alarming phenomenon, it is necessary to intervene by submitting the military to protocols of assessment of psycho-physical abilities, able to guarantee the immediate exclusion from armed services or the elimination of the equipment of the order weapon, in order to prevent any possible and unhealthy use of the same for self-injurious purposes, without this precluding the possibility of continuing to provide service within one's own Armed Force or Force of Order;

pending to know what initiatives the Government will launch during the new year it becomes necessary to know the dimensions of this phenomenon at various levels, considering that in recent years a lack of data and attention from previous Governments has not allowed to professionals, scholars and professionals in general to really grasp the importance of being able to have knowledge;

pathologies such as Dpts, or "post traumatic stress disorder", represent the precursors of those self-injurious actions that psychologically devastate the families of the affected subjects and which should absolutely be monitored over time in order to be able to initiate recovery paths as happens in other NATO countries -:

how many have been the suicides between the members of the Police and the Armed Forces, thus including prison police and the Guardia di Finanza in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018, divided by single Armed Force or Body;

how many Dpts cases have been ascertained between the personnel of the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 divided by single Armed Force or body;

what initiatives are being defined by the Government to combat these phenomena;

how the activities of the veterans center set up by the Ministry of Defense in 2018 are located in this area.
