The activities of the "Griffon 2017" continue in full swing, started on Monday 4 September at the Dobbiaco Airport BZ Detachment. La Grifone is an international, inter-force and inter-agency exercise organized annually by the Italian Air Force within the framework of the SAR.Med.Occ agreement. (Search and Rescue Western Mediterranean) signed between Italy, France and Spain.

The exercise scenario envisages an intense program of flights, both day and night, during which the search and rescue of personnel dispersed in a mountain environment following an aeronautical accident is simulated.

During the activities, the aerial and ground assets of all the components, military and civilian, involved in the exercise are used, operating without interruption, with the aim of recovering missing personnel.

Within the simulated scenario, new for this year's edition, the participation of an inter-force team and qualified inter-agency Safety Flight is expected, to investigate the accident site, collecting the elements useful for its reconstruction and then tracing the causes. , also helping to provide information to the rescue teams to search for any survivors. To this end, the intervention of "Riflemen of the Air" personnel of the 9th and 16th Wing, as well as an Environmental Assessment Team of the Support Service of the Air Force Logistic Command with the task of interdicting the area affected by the accident to preserve the evidence on the ground: a real exercise in the exercise.

The exercise, which will end on Friday 8 September with a Media Day, has the main purpose of training the personnel of the Italian and foreign flight departments, of the rescue coordination centers and ground teams, in the planning, management and management of the search and rescue operations carried out in a mountain environment even in conditions critical meteorological conditions, thus promoting knowledge and the development of common procedures that comply with international standards.
