A new Army Aviation helicopter?

With the gradual entry into service of the NH-90 at the AVES regiments (Army Aviation), it would be appropriate to start thinking of a substitute for the glorious AB-205.

The American version of the American UH-1 Bell, the AB-205 is an aircraft with exceptional qualities but is based on a cell developed almost 60 years ago. It is now clear that with the NH-90 (a helicopter of the 10 class) it will not be possible to replace all 205s, also considering the high purchase and management costs.

A substitute of the 4 / 5 tons will be used to replace different missions as well as to operate in high-intensity scenarios, equipped with night flight instruments, self-protection devices and armor to survive the firearm fire .

These features could be met by the military version of the AW-169M, produced by Leonardo, a 4,5-class helicopter, equipped with two 1.000 Hp thrusters at the rotor, which is twice as powerful as the 205.

There is no doubt that the AVES flight line needs a small number of machines in order to reduce costs and training time. Therefore, in the near future, it will also be necessary to replace the AB-212 and 412, as they have not undergone a major update like the German UH-1 and therefore now at the end of their operational life.

An initial order of 169M by the Italian Army would allow the start of series production and would facilitate the launch on international markets.
