Two soldiers of the United States Army were killed Wednesday in an ambush in Afghanistan, specifically, in the district of Sayed Abad, in the southern province of Wardak.

A Pentagon spokesman said the two soldiers died of injuries sustained following a firefight with a group of Taliban, while conducting a joint patrol action with Afghan forces.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, visiting the capital Kabul, commenting on the attack said that this episode involves even more the need for political success. The mission that the United States has undertaken in Afghanistan must end with a reconciliation, in order to reduce the level of violence in the country.

The policy of the Trump Administration in Afghanistan is aimed at finding an exit strategy, after a military commitment that has now been extended by 18 years. Last year there was the appointment of Zalmay Khalilzad, an Afghan-American diplomat, as a peace envoy for the Middle East, charged with starting - next Saturday in Qatar (a state in which Koranic students maintain a delegation) - with Taliban of peace talks.

However, the Taliban refused to hold direct talks with the Kabul government, not recognizing its authority.

In our opinion, for Washington, it would already be a success if the negotiations led to a commitment by the Taliban (with all the perplexities of the case) not to host terrorist groups in the areas under their control.
