What's more, the decision of the Turkish establishment to start the Operation "Peace Spring" in Kurdistan (northern Syria), Iran adds to the already complicated situation in that Middle Eastern sector.

Quoting Iranian state television, Reuters and AP (Associated Press), they report that Iran would have launched a surprise military operation, using its own special forces, near the borders with Turkey.

The military exercise comes after Iran's clear opposition to the planned Turkish invasion of northern Syria, an operation against Syrian Kurdish fighters. The Syrian Kurds were US allies in the war against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

A statement on Wednesday states that the exercise in Qushchi, in the western province of Azerbaijan in Iran, is overseen by major. General Abdolrahim Mousavi, head of the Iranian army.

The report did not mention the planned Turkish operation or investigate the number of troops participating in the exercise.

The area is located approximately 620 km north-west of Tehran.
