Libya: between the two litigators (al-Sarraj and Haftar) the third (al-Baghdadi) enjoys? It's Italy...?

The visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Rome, coincides with the air campaign, by drones, that the USAF is carrying out in Libya (specifically the southern region of Fezzan), it would seem that in 10 days of operations have been killed 43 terrorists.

The American drones are hitting the bases of the Islamic State which, taking advantage of the civil war, is trying to rise again in Libya.

In the 2015 the militiamen loyal to al-Baghdadi had settled in Cyrenaica but the prompt intervention of General Haftar had inflicted on them a sound defeat.

Now they are reorganizing, taking advantage of the fact that the strong man's forces in Cyrenaica are engaged in the Tripoli offensive.

As stated by General William Gayler, commander of US operations in Africa: we aim to destroy the planning and training of terrorists.

The southern region of Fezzan is the area chosen by al-Baghdadi to revive the challenge to the western world. Located on the border with Niger, Algeria, Chad and Sudan, it allows us to maintain contact with the other terrorist group operating in Africa: Boko Haram.

In the meeting with the president of the Conte council, Pompeo will certainly have addressed the topic of Libya, and the growing concerns of the Trump administration over the resurgence of the Islamic state (which is still not completely eradicated even in Syria).

Leaving aside the phrases of circumstance of the American Secretary on the importance of the Italian Ally for the stability of the region, it would be time for Rome to tackle the Libyan question in a more decisive manner. The fight against al-Baghdadi Islamic militants could be the key to regain ground - and visibility - in the intricate Libyan question.

Certainly Italy provides a fundamental logistical contribution to operations in North Africa, however it would be appropriate to send special forces to the Fezzan (if they are not already active in the country...), on the model of the 45 Task Force employed in Afghanistan, being able to also avail itself of the support of the contingent present in Niger, in order to conduct operations against the jihadists, both direct and through the precision ammunition terminal guide.
