Solitary wolves and emulators: a complex social problem

Nice and Monaco experienced the same drama: only one person made a massacre of innocents. According to what is reported, in Nice perhaps he would have acted, in his final part, a solitary radicalized wolf in his way martyr; in Monaco, on the other hand, a simple boy who seems to have suffered psychological disturbances and bullying in life, not at all tied to terrorist groups or radicalized but still willing to give a lesson. The latter, therefore, would fall into the category of emulators of lone wolves.

Civil society is upset by so much determination and madness. Governments are struggling to try to instill confidence in the people and at the same time try to solve the problem or at least prevent other possible attacks of this kind, even knowing that it is a practically impossible undertaking.

No modern state, but not even those of the past, can stop such evil deeds. There is no absolute security, there is no better or more efficient anti-terrorism or police system than another in Europe, because many of the European nations in the past or in the past have had to deal with terrorism and have therefore developed systems adequate contrast. These systems are calibrated for the type of population, culture, logistics, urban planning, etc. The remaining nations, however, have drawn on the experience made by others. In the footage that showed in the immediacy of the events in Munich, the German police are clearly seen disposed with military techniques or close protection to cover the various sectors to be controlled. Deserted streets and disappeared population. Cowards? No! Cultural and organizational factor different from ours and from the French one, for example. In short, everyone acts according to their models and reference plans.

But the common question that everyone asks is: what drives a boy to such undertakings? There is no definite answer, not least because the people directly involved died. But we can try to understand how easily their unhealthy ideas have matured. Marshall McLuhan (photo on the right) in the 1977 said: "When two societies live side by side, the psychic challenge that exerts the most evolved one causes an explosion of energy in the other". And then everything becomes a little clearer if by evolution we mean the local social model. Aspirant stragists can be disadvantaged, maladjusted, repressed due to multiple factors, but also subjects easy prey to brainwashing via web or TV. Let's try to consider that an American child, second Charles S. Clark in its Violence on TV, "assists on average of 8.000 murders and 100.000 acts of violence before finishing elementary school". Of course the two murderers in question were not Americans, but considering that most television programs are oriented towards American production, the figure is not very far from European reality. If these kids spend their free time in front of the internet, TV, and violent video games social it is clear that there is the possibility that an easily impressionable or at least more predisposed mind may fall prey to delusional ideas.

A massacre can be done as and when you want both with makeshift weapons and with weapons proper. No special skills are needed, you just need to have the unhealthy will to carry out the crime. Unfortunately, today's kids have access to information on how to build bombs, machine guns, guns or even terrorist techniques and tactics diligently explained in the various manuals available everywhere and without any control. I wanted to personally see how easy it can be and within a few hours I found very detailed technical data sheets on the internet on how to build a pistol, a UZI type submachine gun or how to build improvised hand grenades just by reading a booklet that refers to the military capacity of the bomb squad. of the IRA. I also found a manual written by a Brazilian terrorist who is regarded as a basic model for would-be terrorists to follow. As you can see, therefore, potential lone wolves or emulators have everything they want at their disposal with the only limit of imagination. These notions are then integrated with the passion of video games that depersonalize death, violent actions, the sight of blood, the criminal act itself. By now opposing dialogue is no longer seen as an option, but only as a submission, because the dispute is resolved only with the violence and annihilation of the opponent (look at modern cartoons or video games).

Facing this complex scenario therefore requires the collective effort of the whole nation and everyone must do their part: the State has its own, the parents and the individual citizens have theirs. Because you can't just blame video games for fomenting aggression. The problem is much more complex and vast. There are video games on the market that are truly absurd and violent. But it is not only those who contribute to accepting violence as the only channel to make their voices heard to look good. So who are they? Who produces them and sells them.

The real core of the matter is here. The State cannot pretend not to notice that these games exist, because it means that nobody has controlled the product. What then are all the quality certifications and all those abbreviations that attest to the quality of the product and its safety, if similar things happen. Why are there no strict controls on video games?

An industrialist who has an employee who offers him a violent game must take action against the employee himself. This is how we begin to effectively combat the malaise and the predisposition to carry out terrorist or criminal acts. If the employee goes that far, it means there is a problem. So why consider what you propose? If the industrialist offers such a product to a distribution chain, the chain must take measures towards the industrialist. If the distribution chain sells a similar video, then the state must intervene and hit heavily. The people must be protected and above all the youth must be followed with particular attention. We are not talking about pirated games, but those that are freely available on the market and therefore easily identifiable. It is aberrant, we all know it, but it is equally aberrant that there is a society in which blasphemies are said live on TV, so maybe it makes an audience. Risse, gazzarre, profanity, desire to appear at all costs, beatings for the disabled, massacres to punish bullies or because one does not believe in Muhammad: it is the society of decadence and violence.
