Letter (scandalously) patriotic to the President Count

26/10/18

Honorable President of the Council, Dear prof. Count, you often remember being a believer. The writer will quote you therefore: "Wherever the body is, the vultures will gather there"1.

The words of the Gospel of Matthew are worthy of warning to you and to all our rulers: it is the good moment (perhaps such an occasion will not happen again!) To go to Riyadh and negotiate a special agreement directly with Mohamed bin Salman, which concerns , in cascade, not only our government bonds, towards which the Saudi Kingdom has a unique purchasing capacity in the world2, but also our interests in Libya where Saudi Arabia, through the Emirates and Egyptians as well as the Salafiti plays an important role, the possible big deals of our companies in the ambitious MBS projects for your country, our energy policy, a reduction of pressure on our companies active in countries unwelcome in Washinton and Riyadh and, not to be overlooked, possible monstrous investments by the Saudis in Italy. With such a partner, it will be easier to deal with the spread and support the development of Made in Italy.

That the hands of bin Salman are or appear to be dirty with blood should not interest us: apart from the consideration that business is business and that as a political leader it happened to you and you happen to meet worse, Mohamed bin Salman goes through a moment, let's say , of "bad press" and therefore will be more available than ever, without putting inadmissible conditions. If I know the Arabs well, it will be the beginning of a friendship between the two countries that will last for decades, to make the special relationship with Gaddafi's Libya dwarf after the 2001 or the agreement between Berlusconi and Putin himself. But above all, Riyad will not ask us to put ourselves against the allies who have guaranteed our safety and our well-being in the last seventy years, as other powers could do, nor do they feel the influence of Berlin or Paris in their decisions in Europe, as they do often China. At most, he does his best to keep good relations with Washington, which is far away and has nothing against Italy at this historic moment. Last but not least, from time to time, MBS Arabia hits the feet of that Turkey, led by the most astute statesman and provided with the best strategic vision of the last quarter of a century (a son of a good woman, forgive me Professor, but ... have children of this kind in Italy!), which hinders us with every means in the Levant, in those energy projects fundamental to the future of the country, of which politicians never speak.

President, you will still be worried, by the loving son of Holy Mother Church, by those bloodlogged hands of Jamal Khashoggi. Do you know that a reflection takes place? What sense does it have to slaughter a poor Christ in a place full of microphones and video cameras, also known by the neighborhood children, when - it has been seen very well - in the hours and days before he walked without an escort in a Middle Eastern metropolis where life can be worth less of a hundred dollar bill? I have not had - yet - the pleasure of shaking hands with MBS, but maybe I would find some blood. That of the members of his clan, the Al Saud, forced just a year ago, with good or bad, to leave him the reins of power and the keys of the family safe.

But let's not digress. Let's think about sending Moavero Milanesi, Trenta, even Di Maio and Salvini, to Riyadh. Go there yourself, because you speak English and are able to maintain cordial relationships with personalities you have just met. Hurry, before more vultures come down, attracted by the large meal.

With this hope and solicitude, I thank you for your time and wish you Good job!

Dr. David Rossi
