The problem of migrants in Libya: international media and national interest

We have already read and wrote in this paper that today's conflicts are a-linear, hybrid, often played with the involuntary complicity of public opinion, at the same time instrument and recipient of actions aimed at prevailing "particular" economic and geostategici.

This premise is useful in framing the recent attention that some international media have reserved to our country and the cautious action of its unusually competent minister, Marco Minniti, who has in recent months achieved a drastic decline in incoming migration flows .

Let's start from the facts. A CNN video released a few days ago (more) showed in Libya a man in the act of selling his own (it would be interesting to know if it was shot by an operator, or just acquired by so many local collaborators, because in the latter case the situation changes little in terms of objective product verification).

Situation that led the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Raad Al Hussein (photo) to describe the suffering of migrants in Libya as "an outrage to the conscience of humanity"perpetrated without that"the EU and its Member States have done nothing to reduce abuses".

The United Nations Special Envoy to Libya, Lebanese Ghassan Salamé, has also warned of the continuing and serious violations of human rights in the former Italian colony, accusing the EU and implicitly of Italy that it has not done enough to improve the living conditions of many, poor, unhappy people who are massaged to thousands and treated as beasts.

The renewed focus on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, after months in which Italy was left alone by the international community, began long before last summer.

The British agency (but by ..) Reuter, followed by the Associated Press (AP), reported at the end of August alleged alleged agreements by the Italian government with the two main Libyan militaries of Sabratha, from which it would have halved departures towards our coasts compared to the previous year.

The 22 August Reuter reported "groups of civilian and military policemen who prevent migrants from embarking for Italy"And the AP, with a long reportage, illustrated the alleged agreements between Rome and the militias, but failed to point out to the reader that they are willing or disallowed also on them is based today in Libya the exercise of the statutory authority and that of the control on the territory.

Le Monde, authoritative Parisian newspaper and an icon of the French left, who, in September, gave a generic circus to this media circus. "Agreement between Italy and Libyan traffickers".

Here is no question of the sacrosanct right of every man to recognize himself as the most basic human rights and to be treated accordingly. This is not discussed.

However, the timing of complaints, the attention of observers, is not touched in the period when the magnitude of migratory flows was directed to a single country left alone to manage it and greatly facilitated by the massive intervention of FRONTEX's military navy EUNAVFOR MED, and ships belonging to the most diverse NGOs, some of which were then revealed, so to speak, are not particularly prone to uncomfortable contacts with the same traffickers of men.

And we can not even notice how this attention reaches the peak precisely with the unusual and rewarding Italian intervention that involved all the local and provincial authorities of the Libyan cities crossed by the flow, in addition to the tribes of Fezzan and the authorities of neighboring states .

It seems then that we wanted to create a "consensus" damage to our government - to return to the subject of this article - by addressing directly to the vast segments of our public opinion, traditionally very sensitive to the reasons for unconditional acceptance, for political reasons but also for the economic interests that arise from it.

And why not, with an eye to the next election deadlines, in which Minniti (pictured left) and his party will try to bring the success achieved last summer.

In fact, there have already been renewed criticisms from the minister, who in the past had found important resistance, even within the CdM, by his own party partners (Graziano Delrio), so much so that the Head of State lock it with public approval documents.

The writer's opinion is that many Italian activism in Africa is burning: to a France, historically unwilling to share the influence of those who still feel its protectorates, used to consider the area of Sahel (Algeria, Chad, Niger, Mali) as their "backyard"; and the United Kingdom committed to contending in the oil field - but not only - the Italian primacy in the African country.

It should therefore be rejected, this "offensive", recalling that it is for international organizations to solve the humanitarian problem in Libya; the only ones currently able to operate in the country in a full legitimacy framework (last September, Italy gave UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration a € 28 of millions of euros to be spent in our former colony ).

And remembering the many beautiful souls that the States all decide and operate only on the basis of national interests, the same as always claimed by our neighbors in France, that they are (rightly) careful to distinguish between economic migrants, refugees and refugees, have always sent back, that is, to us, the migrants who wanted to enter Republic, without worrying about how they were treated in our country.
