Turkey: coup leaders or heroes?

When we talk about war the reasons can be recognized both to one faction and to the other.

When one hears of a "coup", the incumbent government automatically assumes the role of victim.

In the aftermath of the clumsy putsch attempt in Turkey, the "rhetoric for children" has sodolated terms such as democracy, justice and freedom. Historical parallels were then wasted with previous episodes in the country or abroad.

The correct comparison should be made with the attempted putsch which saw the Germans as protagonists in the '44. An episode that the cinema has well transposed in the movie "Operation Valkyrie". On that occasion the military attacked Hitler's life and tried to seize power. It went wrong and 5.000 people were executed. Then, in war, no one dreamed of negatively judging the action and congratulating them on the survival of the institutions or of "democracy". Today we are not at war with Turkey and this makes a big difference.

That the Turkish president is an indefensible figure is also known to the less informed: a dictator who is anything but secular (in a country that had made secularism its foundation before his advent) is hated by most of his own fellow citizens. Which? The democratic and liberal ones, for example! Do we want to remember the dozens of journalists imprisoned for being uncomfortable or irreverent?

But let's talk about the Turkish military. The armed forces coincide with the national flag from the "Father of the Turks", Kamâl Atatürk, until Erdogan arrives. Today, Turkey represents (at least numerically) the second NATO force. Homeland and Honor they are values common to every uniform, however for the five years of the Syrian massacre those soldiers have had to assist, feed, cure, arm and protect real "murderers", the so-called "moderate rebels" (first), jihadists of ISIS and al Nusra, after.

In February we were in Salma (read article), a Syrian city a few kilometers from the northern border, just regained. The hordes of al Nusra (read "al Qaeda") were protected by Turkish artillery fire. But didn't our ally have to fight the terrorists?

Did the soldiers who loaded the howitzers for such infamous actions preordained by Ankara feel proud of their actions? I don't believe it. As I am sure journalists are right who, having denounced the supply of weapons to terrorists in Syria by the secret services, are paying for their testimony with years in prison. Who knows why the headquarters of the services was among the targets targeted by the insurgents last night ...

In the throes of a delirium of omnipotence, Erdogan last year was responsible for the shooting down of a Russian fighter-bomber in Syria. He threw more gasoline on the fire, if ever there was need. Last month the Sultan then returned to his steps trying to re-establish relations with Putin.

In recent months the policy of support for the chaos across the border, in Syria and Iraq, has been "properly" revised. The first consequence was numerous attacks, the price of which was often paid by the military.

But let's get back to today: the thousands of soldiers who pay the "highest price" (hundreds have already done so) will one day be recognized as "heroes". Sure clumsy but heroes.

They did not understand that the media world is a show with actors and scenes and they made serious mistakes. They let (they too) "escape" the Leader. With the curfew they prevented half of the Turks who oppose the regime from taking to the streets, making it appear that the protesters, summoned by the chief and his devout and pious mullahs, represented "the Turkish people" and not the court of a dictator. They then left a free hand to information professionals who massacred them without mercy.

Finally not even a bit of modesty for the story ... The "built" photo that was used by the media in the last 24 hours is that of a man in front of a tank. "Like Tiananmen Square!" Too bad that the Chinese in front of tanks in 89 (photo) had to do with the main instrument of a regime ("Political power is born from the barrel of a gun", Mao taught), not of its naive opponents. And in fact, unlike the Chinese in 89, the Turkish soldiers did not open fire on civilians, killing three thousand and wounding ten thousand.

With the ongoing repression of Erdogan's internal and external open accounts, a new one will be added. To some it may even seem the occasion to consolidate the power of the Turkish regime at will. To others, those who have remained to watch, will it be useful not to make mistakes next time?
